I Built a Free Tool That Records Reality

A free, local tool with no accounts, no tracking, and no promises.

By Author: A real entry from my own use of the app.

The tool is called Worklog, and it’s free. No strings attached.

It records what you actually work on each day. That’s all it does.

There are no accounts, no tracking, no cookies, and no data sent anywhere. It runs on your device, works offline, and stores everything locally in your browser.

That also means something important: if you delete the app or clear your browser data, the information is gone. Nothing is backed up automatically. The only way to keep a copy is to export a CSV file yourself, when you decide. You can reopen the link and use the app again as many times as you want. There’s no limit and nothing to re-enable.

I built it this way on purpose.

Most tools in this space don’t respect reality. They score you, push you, optimize you, or quietly depend on you staying confused long enough to keep paying. They sell systems before proving their usefulness.

Worklog doesn’t motivate you. It doesn’t coach you. It doesn’t try to improve you. It just records what happened. Over time, that’s enough to see patterns without a tool trying to explain your behavior back to you.

Using it is straightforward.

You open the app, optionally add it to your home screen, and each day you record what you worked on, how much time it took, what you expected to happen, and what actually happened. There’s an optional decision field if you want it.

Nothing is required.

Nothing is enforced.

I’m sharing this because I’m done talking about ideas in the abstract. I’d rather publish real tools that work, even if they’re small, and explain how and why they’re built this way. If you want to learn from that process, you can follow along.

If you just want the tool, take it and use it.

Free means free.

I’ll keep writing about building tools like this, what goes into them, and what you can learn from making things that actually function instead of selling promises.

If you want to follow along as I build and share tools like this, find me on Substack.
