Prison salvation: ‘Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time,’ the words spread like acid in his ears. The chow hall guard’s southern twang confused Dennis because the CO was from Missouri. Dennis was from Florida and didn’t know southern accents extended to midwest states.
The inmate behind Dennis in the chow line began singing a song. He was inches away humming in a mindless buzz. Dennis turned around and said,
“Stop singing in my ear.”
The convict swayed and continued to mouth words in a low trance but hadn’t heard a word Dennis said. His earphones were blasting a tune Dennis didn’t know.
Dennis turned around and waited to receive his food tray but the food line stalled. The serenading prisoner sang on.
“I told you to back off!” Dennis screamed as he spun around and craned his neck in the offending crooner’s face.
